Bath Time!

Aunt Becky bought Diana an inflatable duck to help with bath time.  We were waiting to try it until Diana was siting on her own.

Diana tries out the duck.

Diana was a bit tentative at first.

Daddy giving Diana a bath.

Diana likes to play with her bath toys.  They usually end up in her mouth.
She also likes to splash the water.

Thanks for the duck Aunt Becky!

The Zoo

Grandpa Steven came to visit this weekend.  On Saturday we went to the zoo and had a barbaque.  It was a beautiful day.

Grandpa and Diana stroll around the zoo.

Aunt Rachelle and Diana check out the snakes, lizards, turtles, and frogs.

Diana sits and observes the people entering the Bald Eagle exhibit.

What Else Can I Put In My Mouth?

Diana is putting everything in her mouth from food to fingers.

Diana licking the yogurt out of the bowl

Diana worked very hard to put the seat strap in her mouth.

I love books!

Diana's stacking toy seems to be her favorite new object to put in her mouth.  The problem... it barely fits.

Sitting Up

Diana is doing a wonderful job sitting up.  She is happy sitting for long periods.  She plays with the toys in front of her while she sits.

Diana is putting everything in her mouth.
She often gets frustrated when objects don't fit into her mouth.

Elmo spent some time in Diana's mouth until mom realized the dye comes off when wet.

It's amazing how fast she is growing and changing.

The Backyard, Part Two

As I said earlier, I needed some help, so I brought in The Graduate.  He was extremely helpful, and we got a lot done that day.

Here are a couple of before and after shots of the more difficult areas.

I'm basically done cutting down the grass, weeds, and blackberry bushes.  I've spread the clippings around the yard, and now it's time to move on to the mulching phase.  I know that the only thing our loyal readers are more concerned about than Diana is our backyard, so I'll keep the updates coming.

Swings and Roundabouts

Diana is growing and changing all the time.  On Sunday Diana had no interest in sitting up with all of her friends.  By Thursday she was sitting by herself.  She is still not interested in rolling over.  She is spending longer on her tummy without getting fussy.

Diana is sitting up!
Yesterday was the first time she sat on her own for close to 10 minutes.

Diana tried yogurt and seemed to enjoy it.
Her first food that we didn't have to mash, puree, or mix with breast milk.

Today we went to the park with Diana.
She took her first ride on the swings.
Due to the HOT weather it was a quick outing.

WEEEEEE!

The Backyard, Part One

When we bought the house two years ago, our backyard was completely barren.  We had been told that the previous owner had worked to clear all of the blackberry bushes and weeds out of the yard.  He even planted some new plants on the east slope and along the west fence.  One of the reasons we liked this house so much was that the backyard presented such potential. Courtney and I, having such green thumbs, proceeded to disregard the backyard for the next two years.

Back in the day, circa August 2006

We made it through a pregnancy, childbirth, and six months with Diana.  In that time, the weeds and blackberry bushes were plotting their revenge.  In mid-July, our backyard looked like this:

Eventually, we want the backyard to be a place where Diana can run around, play on the newly constructed putting green, and engage in general merriment.  A patio might be nice, too.  Or a helipad.  We probably have room for it all.  All we need to do is get rid of the weeds.  My first thought was napalm, but Courtney was concerned about the long-term health implications of backyard chemical warfare.  Luckily, a friend suggested looking into cardboard as a sheet mulching technique.  I spent approximately 42 hours researching cardboard-based sheet mulching on the internet, and it turns out that random people on the internet claim that laying cardboard down on your yard will kill weeds and even blackberry bushes.  Seven different people on the internet can't be wrong, so that's what I decided to do.

Step one: clear everything out.  It turns out that we can leave the cut grass under the cardboard, but I need to cut everything down as far as possible first.

After day two

I needed some serious help, and when one needs serious help, they usually turn to their younger brother.  Hey, at least this time I didn't ask him to help us move :)

Diana had her 6 month check up last week.  She weighed 17.4 pounds and was 26 inches long.  She has been working on sitting up, eating new foods, and drinking from a cup.

Introducing Solid Foods

We began introducing sold foods to Diana.  She has been a bit skeptical of the new foods.
She has tried sweet potato, avacado, and banana.

Sweet Potato, her first food

Yuck!  Avocado

Ewwwww!

Banana!  Yum!
